A native of Detroit, Michigan, Sarah Masen-Dark earned degrees in English and Information Science while traveling as a performance artist in the United States and Europe. In 2006, Sarah began studying ceramics in Nashville, working closely in 2014-16 with studio potter, Caroline Cercone, who introduced her to the Japanese folk craft movement. Influenced heavily by Cercone and the Mingei tradition, Sarah creates wares that celebrate simple moments throughout the day. Her studio is in Nashville, TN.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work aims at amplifying beauty in workaday objects. I am particularly interested in the broad but deep-down satisfaction beautiful material and design bring to our lives. I enjoy working with the earthy elemental character of clay to build simple wares, vessels, and sculptures. Dirt and heat and stuff of stars, the work is my tiny wave back at the cosmos.
